Break Through Banners: Make a Statement on the Field

August 16, 2011  |  Field Notes

As the 2011-2012 school year begins, cheerleaders and dancers are trading in their camp outfits for uniforms and are getting their material “game day ready”. The football players have dusted their cleats off and strapped on their pads and are ready to take on their rivals. As a cheerleader you’re an ambassador of school spirit, so that can mean making signs, handing out game day ribbons, or making sure your break through banner is polished and ready for those Friday night lights.

A break through banner can really amp up the pride for your team. At my high school, we had an awesome break though banner with our school name, mascot, and school colors. It went everywhere with the cheerleaders. I can still close my eyes and think back to our football games: the stands are packed, the band is on the field, the cheerleaders are lined up at the goal posts, and the announcer getting on the mic and shouting “heeeeeeeeeeere come your Wakulla War Eagles” and BAM our football players would run through the banner and the crowd would go wild!

Since we didn’t have to worry about making a huge run through banner in the summer we ended up saving some of our cheer budget because we didn’t have to buy rolls of paper or gallons of paint. Our coach would also agree that we had more time in the summer to prepare our plan of attack for pep-rallies, competition practice, and what we were going to do for National School Spirit Day (which is RIGHT around the corner, so don’t forget to pledge your squads hours).
