Cheerleading is a different kind of sport. We have no off-season, there is no ball involved, and on top of supporting other teams, we support each other. When we hit the mat, we are out to prove that we are the best team, and we are out to gain respect from other teams proving that we are true competitors.
The National High School Cheerleading Championship is only a day away, so for the teams that are attending, remember why you are going in the first place. You are there to represent your team and do the best YOU can do! Earn respect from other teams and fans by proving why you deserve to be there. Have fun and enjoy showing off to the whole world what you have worked all year for. Don’t worry what other teams are doing; it is your team versus the score sheet and no one else! A true competitor is an athlete who places personal excellence ahead of winning and focuses on the journey rather than the destination.
Remember to not sweat the small things, keep your cool, and always have fun! Competition wasn’t created to pile on the extra stress but to give cheerleaders an outlet to showcase their talents while having a great time. Pump each other up throughout the routine, and encourage one another before and after performances. Having this bond with your teammates will shine throughout the performance, and others will take note of it.
Think about what you can do on the mat to earn respect. Is it hitting that new, innovative stunt that has never been performed before? Or is it pushing your teammates to do their very best while competing and letting that love shine through the performance? Either way, cheerleaders are a special kind of athlete. Be sure to use your abilities to earn respect on and off the mat!
