As summer comes to a close and school goes back in session, it brings us to my favorite time of year…Competition Season! Some of the best performances in cheerleading and dance history were performed in the 2011-2012 season. Unforgettable routines were displayed week after week from the East coast to the West coast and many of them were caught in action! Take some time to look back at all of the memorable moments from last season on Varsity TV:

There are no words to describe winning the gold medal again and standing on the platform with this team. We constantly came face to face with adversity and persevered. You’re Right! It’s NOT a Sport!

March 10, 2012  |  For the Love of Competition  |  8 Comments

Since the day I decided to become a cheerleader, I’ve been told that cheerleading isn’t a sport. “It has no ball.” “There’s no physical contact.” “Anyone can yell on the sidelines.” We, as cheerleaders have heard it all…seriously. So, I began to think… Maybe, just maybe, cheerleading isn’t a sport. In fact, I think it’s much more than that. It’s taught me a number of lessons that I wouldn’t have learned if I’d been in a “real” sport.

The Big Jump: High School to College Cheerleading

March 31, 2011  |  For the Love of Competition  |  2 Comments

I’m from the great state of South Carolina, where cheerleading rules the land. Almost every girl I went to high school with was a cheerleader at some point in their lives, and if they weren’t, they knew our cheers and could do them along with us. One thing about South Carolina cheerleading is we were not allowed to travel out of state to compete. Our season actually ended with the state championship in November. You can imagine once I made Clemson and was given the opportunity to compete at the College National Championship in Florida, it was a huge adjustment.

There will ALWAYS be a necessity for traditional cheerleaders, but the last decades, and more specifically, the last several years has seen cheerleading morph into a more competitive phenomenon. Traditional cheerleading is the genesis for today’s new genres of cheer-based performance and sport. They are all different but spring from the same well. Traditional cheerleading gave life to competitive cheer and that competitive drive has created the offspring of all star cheerleading and now STUNT.

Respect Isn’t Given, It’s Earned!

February 11, 2011  |  For the Love of Competition  |  1 Comment

Cheerleading is a different kind of sport. We have no off-season, there is no ball involved, and on top of supporting other teams, we support each other. When we hit the mat, we are out to prove that we are the best team, and we are out to gain respect from other teams proving that we are true competitors.

The Heart to Cheer

There is rarely a week to go by that I don’t hear another powerful story of something truly amazing and inspirational that a cheerleader or cheerleading team has done. This week I want to feature one of those stories. A friend and co-worker ran across this article and sent it my way. She knew it was the perfect story for the blog, and I could not agree more.

Cheer Team = Family

January 26, 2011  |  Life Beyond Cheer  |  2 Comments

Being a "cheerleader" means different things to different people. To some people, being a cheerleader means you have a sideline pass to every sporting event. To some people, it's just an after school activity. To some people, it's a way to hang out with friends and work together. All of these things are great, but for some people being a cheerleader means adopting a new family.
