Read MoreWelcome to The University of Minnesota, the birthplace of cheerleading! This is Joanna Fritsch and I’m reporting on the border battle between the Minnesota Gophers and the Wisconsin Badgers. I’m a senior captain on the All-Girl team. Every year, both Gophers and Badgers alike anticipate this game, as it is one of the oldest and most traditional rivalries in the Big Ten. Their skill level is incredible, and I can’t help but to compare their tumbling to the tumble-weeds you see in the fields out here: quick, lively, never losing momentum. Their pyramids and stunts are impressive, but not as impressive as their ability to excite and engage the crowd. Many of this year’s varsity squad members started their cheerleading careers wearing tiny black and white pleated skirts as they stood at the metal rails and mimicked the moves of the then varsity cheerleaders on the sidelines. They grew up always wanting to cheer for the Panthers and now it’s finally their time. “We love being part of a school and program that has as much tradition as Permian does,” says Amanda Stallcup.

Read MoreFriday night football games are a right of passage for America’s youth. A time where the children of today—the adults of tomorrow—take center stage in their community. A typical game day at Average Joe High School features a pep rally and send off for the football team – an entire community embracing its own. The game itself is attended by the whole student body, the whole community…the whole world seems within reach for the players, the cheerleaders, the band, and the students. Those fantastical moments in high school are the pillars of strength that young men and women draw upon when heading out into the world for themselves.
